Students gathered this week for Opening Engage – an annual event that reinforces the university mission to serve while marking the official start to the semester.

Cumberlands' students gathered together this week to mark the official start to the semester – Opening Engage. The annual event welcomes students to campus and reinforces the University's mission of leadership through service.

Dr. Jamirae Holbrook, vice-president for student affairs, addressed the student body and encouraged them to participate in service this year. Cumberlands' Season of Service will take place during the fall semester. The initiative is a great chance to get involved, providing ample opportunities for students to connect with the broader community.

"Remember, service is not simply about ticking off tasks on a checklist; it's about being present, understanding the needs of those you are helping, and genuinely caring for the individuals you uplift,” she said. “Your actions can profoundly impact the lives of others, and we believe in your potential to lead with compassion and purpose."

Dr. Holbrook also addressed some of the work Cumberlands’ students accomplished during the 2023-2024 academic year, including:

  • 386 individual community service projects undertaken by UC students.
  • 7,542 service hours contributed by UC students.
  • 3,771 volunteer opportunities provided for UC students.
  • 56 community partners' missions supported by UC students.

Two students specifically were recognized for their service during the past academic year. Madison Fields received the A.T. Siler Memorial Service Award, and Chaz Disney received the T.E. Mahan Memorial Service Award. These recognitions are presented to a male and female student in their junior year who make outstanding contributions through service to their community.

Jeremy A. Taylor served as this year’s guest speaker for Opening Engage. Formerly a social studies teacher and basketball coach, Jeremy now dedicates his life to encouraging people through public speaking, leadership training, and life coaching.

Dr. Holbrook described his work best, "His mission is to help people see their value, recognize their potential, and live out their existence, as he has had the privilege and pleasure of doing so in speaking to tens of thousands of people - people of all ages and many different backgrounds."

Jeremy spoke to students about being engaged in college and everyday life. He encouraged them to implement three key things in their lives - be present, work hard, and respect others as they seek to serve.

"When we choose a life of service, we are choosing a life that is not going to be easy," he said. "But, that is okay because we are doing so for all of the right reasons." He urged students to give themselves to a greater cause, as it will lead them to a more fulfilling life.

Jeremy's remarks during Opening Engage geared students and employees up for one of Cumberlands' largest service events of the year, Shoes for the Soul. Soon, students from the surrounding community will come to campus for an unforgettable experience. Cumberlands’ students will wash the young students’ feet – in the spirit of Jesus Christ, who washed his disciples' feet – and give them new shoes and school supplies. (Rumor has it that there will also be ice cream and a special visit from Pete the Patriot!)
